What is Web-Based Learning?

Every day we learn a new jargon for the technological era. Many of us are familiar with e-learning and distance learning, but what is web-based learning? This article explains learning on the web, a fantastic resource for modern students.

Modern technology and terminology
In the last 10 to 15 years, most of us have heard expressions like “distance education” and “e-learning”. Are they the same as learning on the web? Well — yes and no. The three terms have subtle but important differences.

Distance education is any form of education that can be done remotely. It takes place on campus – but it does not necessarily refer to online education or learning on the Web. Whenever students take an educational program without physically attending a college, it is a form of distance education.

For example, in the years before the Internet, students had the opportunity to study at their own pace by mail. Correspondence courses allowed students to study at home using college materials that had been sent to them. Later, they would send their exams by mail and wait for comments and / or more material. Although the term “distance learning” or “distance education” covers this type of education, it is a broad term that can also refer to e-learning and web-based learning.

Web-based learning, also known as e-learning, refers to any form of e-learning. This can be interactive teaching programs to PowerPoint tutorials, online conferences, or follow an online program describing the required readings, written assignments and online exams. Web-based learning is part of distance learning and takes place specifically online.

The benefits of learning on the Web
Web-based learning has many advantages for modern students, especially because it gives them the opportunity to go to university without having to change their daily schedules. Admittedly, you need some time to study the day – but overall, it’s much more convenient and flexible than a traditional college. This means that many students who have not gone to college for work or family reasons now have the opportunity to earn an online degree, whether through the online degree program at a particular institution or a college entirely online. It also saves money – no need to buy gas for daily travel or pay for the room and the meal. For people who care about the environment, web-based learning also reduces paper costs and auto pollution.

General Differences Between Web Learning and Campus Attendance
With a web-based education, you will graduate online.

Web-based learning and on-campus education present unique challenges and benefits. The choice of someone over the other is purely personal, because the different styles and methods of learning will appeal to different people. Some people get better results in a person-to-person atmosphere. They may feel compelled to learn because they are actively inspired by other students and teachers. On the other hand, they have to move from class to class, caring about their work and their family, with little choice to be in that specific class at that time that day.
